TRAVEL
Mr Thomas’s Homestay is located at Nemberala Beach on the south-western tip of the island of Rote. Rote lies south of Kupang, the capital of West Timor in the east of Indonesia. Travel in the area is relatively simple as most people speak good English and as most people travel to West Timor to visit Rote the locals are very helpful in pointing you in the right direction.
It is possible to take a bus from Dili in East Timor to Kupang in West Timor but please be aware that visas for Indonesia need to be obtained before commencing travel as they are not available at the East/West Timor border.
Most visitors to Rote fly from Bali or Jakarta to Kupang in West Timor. Overnight in Kupang (there are great night markets for eating there) and either catch the early morning fast ferry to Rote – a journey of around 2 hours - or catch a plane. Tickets for planes and ferries as well as transport to the ferry port and airport can be arranged at your accommodation house in Kupang. Then take a bemo or mini-van to Nemberala which takes about another 2 hours, arriving around lunch time. Pick up from the ferry or airport can be arranged by Mr Thomas, who has a mini-van.
